چکیده

This paper proposes a new niching method named hierarchical niching, which combines spatial niching in search space and a continuous temporal niching concept. The method is naturally implemented as a new genetic algorithm, QHFC, under a sustainable evolutionary computation model: the Hierarchical Fair Competition (HFC) Model. By combining the benefits of the temporally continuing search capability of HFC and this spatial niching capability, QHFC is able to achieve much better performance than deterministic crowding and restricted tournament selection in terms of robustness, efficiency, and scalability, simultaneously, as demonstrated using three massively multi-modal benchmark problems. HFC-based genetic algorithms with hierarchical niching seem to be very promising for solving difficult realworld problems.

A Continuous Plane Model to Machine Layout Problems Considering Pick-Up and Drop-Off Points: An Evolutionary Algorithm

One of the well-known evolutionary algorithms inspired by biological evolution is genetic algorithm (GA) that is employed as a robust and global optimization tool to search for the best or near-optimal solution with the search space. In this paper, this algorithm is used to solve unequalsized machines (or intra-cell) layout problems considering pick-up and drop-off (input/output) points. Such p...

Multi-layer Clustering Topology Design in Densely Deployed Wireless Sensor Network using Evolutionary Algorithms

Due to the resource constraint and dynamic parameters, reducing energy consumption became the most important issues of wireless sensor networks topology design. All proposed hierarchy methods cluster a WSN in different cluster layers in one step of evolutionary algorithm usage with complicated parameters which may lead to reducing efficiency and performance. In fact, in WSNs topology, increasin...

The Crowding Approach to Niching in Genetic Algorithms

A wide range of niching techniques have been investigated in evolutionary and genetic algorithms. In this article, we focus on niching using crowding techniques in the context of what we call local tournament algorithms. In addition to deterministic and probabilistic crowding, the family of local tournament algorithms includes the Metropolis algorithm, simulated annealing, restricted tournament...

Designing A New Elitist Nondominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm For A Multiobjective Long Term Groundwater Monitoring Application

Although usage of genetic algorithms (GAs) has become widespread, the theoretical work from the genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC) field has been largely ignored by practitioners in realworld applications. This paper provides an overview of a three-step method for utilizing GEC theory to ensure robust search and avoid the common pitfalls in GA applications. Additionally, this study pres...
